Welcome! If you’re considering therapy for the first time, you might have questions, uncertainties, or even a bit of apprehension. That’s completely normal. Therapy is a journey of self-discovery and healing, and taking this step shows courage and a commitment to your well-being. Let’s explore what therapy is all about and what you can expect as you embark on this empowering path.
What is Therapy?
Therapy, at its core, is a collaborative process between you and a trained professional—a therapist—who is dedicated to helping you navigate life’s challenges, understand yourself better, and achieve personal growth. Contrary to some misconceptions, a therapist is not here to give you all the answers or tell you what to do. Instead, they serve as a compassionate guide, providing support, insight, and tools to help you find your own solutions.
Your Therapist’s Role
Your therapist is there to listen attentively, without judgment, and to help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe space. They are trained in various therapeutic techniques and mental health science, including how our nervous system functions and regulates emotions. Understanding these processes can empower you to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges more effectively.
Here’s what your therapist can do for you:
- Reflect and Validate: Your therapist helps you explore your emotions and experiences, validating your feelings and providing perspective.
- Provide Tools and Strategies: They equip you with practical tools and coping strategies to navigate life’s ups and downs.
- Educate: Your therapist educates you about mental health conditions, how they affect you, and what you can do to manage them.
- Support: Above all, your therapist offers unwavering support as you work towards your goals and navigate personal growth.
Finding the Right Therapist
Finding a therapist who feels like a good fit for you is crucial. Research shows that a strong therapeutic alliance—meaning a positive and trusting relationship between you and your therapist—is one of the most important factors in successful therapy outcomes. It’s okay to take your time to find someone you feel comfortable with and who understands your unique needs and experiences. I suggest reaching out to a few different therapists (Psychology Today’s “Find a Therapist” tool is a great place to start) and asking if they provide a free consultation. I offer a free 30-minute consultation to all prospective clients. During this time, we discuss what is bringing them into therapy, what they can expect from me as a therapist, and answer any questions or concerns they might have. It’s important to have this free consultation as a “vibe check.” Nothing is worse than paying for a whole session and 10 minutes in you’re already thinking, “Nope, I do not connect with this person!”
Starting Sessions
I always like to remind new clients, I don’t expect them to know how therapy works. Me, on the other hand? This is my job! And it’s my job to provide structure, guidance, and insight into the therapeutic process. Each therapist will conduct sessions differently, but I’ll break down some things you can typically expect at the beginning.
During the first session, here are my agenda items:
- Orient to the Therapeutic Space: Let clients look around the room, point out the tissues and fidget toys, and get comfortable (take off your shoes, grab a blanket, hug a pillow, sit on the floor…whatever helps you feel cozy!)
- Extended Check-In: Any follow up questions on paperwork? How are you feeling coming into my office today? What excitements or fears do you have?
- Start to Build Rapport: This might look like finding a common interest, cracking a joke, or just attuning to the client so we can start to be comfortable together.
- History Taking and Goal Setting: This is going to take a few sessions most likely. During this time I emphasize to clients that we can “skip” any questions they’re not ready to answer…building trust takes time! Questions might include things about your family of origin growing up, your experiences in school, relationships with others, pivotal moments, and personal challenges.
